The Mobile Photo Awards – Open for Submissions

by Pu on October 8, 2011

Mobile photography has acquired an enormous following over the last few years and it is now considered by many an alternative and valid form of visual art, on par with traditional photography. Thanks to the diffusion of mobile devices, even amateurs with no previous experience and with no background in photography are given an easy and accessible form of expression.

MPA Mobile Photo AwardsThe Mobile Photo Awards are addressed to all mobile photographers out there. To take part in the contest, an entry fee of $20 for three images and $30 for five images is required; every image submitted is allowed for inclusion to up to three categories. Categories span a broad spectrum of photography genres, from Architecture to Digital Art & Collage. Specially sponsored app categories offer even more possibilities and hints to get creative. A Jury composed by renown names in the world of mobile photography will be judging all the images submitted. Note that any photo taken/processed with a mobile device is eligible for entry, regardless of the specific medium and software used.

The first placement will be awarded a $500 Apple Store gift card. Other prizes include more gift cards, 500px pro accounts, MacPhun’s desktop photo software and more, not to forget a feature on a tour gallery exhibit.

If you want to know more about the contest, categories and prizes, please visit the MPA official page. The deadline for submissions is November 30, 2011.

$20-$30 per person seems a bit too much for this kind of contest, also given the prizes.

Grendalin, this was written by Dan Berman, founder of the Mobile Photo Awards, in a different forum ” like all open calls for gallery shows the money goes to pay for the costs associated with gallery fees, mounting, shipping, framing and displaying 50 archival images in a minimum of three galleries. Also, in our case, unlike gallery shows, there is close to $2,000 in prize money, shipping of prints and frames to 25 winning entrants from all over the world, a web site, hosting, gateway fees for credit card payments etc…in all likelihood the awards will not break even. But it will allow us to develop a brand which hopefully someday will be of interest to sponsors with money.”

On PhotoCompete.com of the 84 competitions with an exhibition component 81 of them charge an entry fee. The other 3 are corporate sponsored which is basically advertising. That’s the art world.

I just paid $30 to enter three of my photos into an open call in a gallery in Florida.. I haven’t heard anything back yet except that they received my artwork. I don’t know if they’ll be accepted and if not they’ll keep my $30 to help pay the costs associated with the show… and no prizes for winners, just a print hanging. Pretty standard

The entry fee for the Mobile Phone Awards is lower than what I’ve seen for open calls. The artists do get proceeds from any sales from prints after gallery standard percentage and fees, and you’re not signing your rights to your artwork over to anyone.
