Misskiwi’s HarrisShutter camera for iPhone is currently free in the App Store. HarrisShutter only works with images taken in-app; its purpose it to show given subject(s) in motion, but with a little creativity it can also be used to achieve special effects beyond its original purpose. The app’s normal price is $0.99.

The Harris Shutter that inspired Misskiwi’s app is a device that owes its name to its inventor, Kodak’s Robert S. Harris. It was devised to produce a very recognizable color effect by exposing the same frame three times, one for each of the three primary color channels by using different colored filters in front of the lens of the camera. In presence of motion within the frame the effect is particularly evident because the same subject is shot in different colors and occupies different parts of the frame, creating a colorful result. Given the ease of color channel manipulation of modern image editing software, the effect is relatively simple to reproduce digitally during the post-processing stage and there is a number of different apps on the market to recreate it instantly with mobile cameras.

Misskiwi’s HarrisShutter is designed to work in real time. You take three different shots of a given subject in movement, one for each color channel, immediately seeing how they are combined through the live view. After the third shot is taken, the app merges all three images together. There are a few presets to enhance the picture taken with the camera and there is also the possibility to adjust brightness and rotation.
