Hipstamatic 225 & Wicker Park Hipstapak

by Pu on September 24, 2011

Hipstamatic 225 was released earlier this week. The latest version of the app comes with the MultiSlide Flash charger, a feature which allows to select between hardware and software flash (only working with iPhone 4) and with a brand new hipstapak.
Wicker Park HipstapakThe Wicker Park hipstapak owes its name to the renown namesake park located in Chicago’s West Town area. The pak includes three items: a lens, a flash and a camera case. The Damen camera case blends together metallic finish with wood paneling for giving your Hipstamatic a distinctive urban look. The Jolly Rainbo 2x Flash is, in Hipstamatic’s team words, a “jovial strobe” suited for the darkest and less photo-taking friendly lighting situations. Lucas AB2 is a lens delivering beautiful golden tones, ideal for bringing out the warm colors of the upcoming fall season.

Wicker Park HipstapakThe Wicker Park hipstapak is available as in-app purchase with the updated Hipstamatic 225 for $0.99/€0.79/£0.69.

Hi everyone! The new flash doesn’t lighten things up for me, it *darkens* them (not including using the LED flash, but that doesn’t seem right either, or at least any different than normally using it with other flashes). 🙁 I’m running an up to date iPhone4, & I can’t figure out what the problem is or how to fix it. It’s driving me crazy! Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

I couldn’t even download the pack. The app crashes every time I try to.

Try logging out of your Hipsta account, turning your phone completely off, turn it back on, go to the Hipsta store (or whatever it’s called) & log back in, & then see if you can download it after that. 🙂

Ok, I figured it out. The new flash is ONLY meant to be used with the iPhone4’s LED flash, which it enhances (looks much, much better than the flash with the regular phone app). It’s a great flash for Hipstamatic on my iPhone4. That being said, unfortunately iPhone3G & 3GS Hipstamatic users will NOT be able to make full use of the new flash (sorry guys, including both of my 3GS usin’ brothers.) It might still be useful, though. Try using it in very bright light. The colors can be nice & rich. 🙂 I hope Hipstamatic doesn’t alienate their non-iPhone4 using customers with this one. A lot of people still use the 3G or 3GS.

Yes of course. Hipstamatic flashes are not “real”, they are just enhancements. What they write in-app may lead to think they will add flash also on iphones that don’t support flash at all. I was fooled too at first 😀

Kara September 26, 2011 at 11:53 am

Hello 🙂 Yeah, the “flashes” are not real, just enhancements (like being able to add an effect to a Hipstamatic lens that it doesn’t come with), but the new Jolly Rainbo 2x flash is *specifically* designed to *only* to be used with the LED flash (it affects the way the phone/app interprets the LED flash). If you don’t use the LED flash, it results in a really dark pic with a large black vignette, which is how I think they “calm down” the general washing-out effects of the LED flash on it’s own, like in the default i4 camera app. But, like I said, if you don’t have an iPhone4, try using the new flash in *really* bright light (sunlight, really bright lightbulbs, etc). You really can get some nice, moody shots with it. 🙂

Thanks for clearing that up, I was wondering too.

Kara September 26, 2011 at 11:40 am

You’re very welcome- it was driving me crazy, so I figured others were being insanely puzzled over it, too. I’m glad I could help once I had it figured out. 🙂

Kara September 26, 2011 at 11:43 am

(oh- see below for a bit more, if you haven’t seen it already! I meant that comment to show up for everyone, but be a response from yours like I *just* left. So glad I could help! 🙂

Kara September 26, 2011 at 3:42 am

No problem, Steve. 🙂 It took about a day of writing to the Hipstamatic people about their new flash (which is so unlike their other “flashes”). I’m really happy that I could help explain it to someone else. 🙂 Just remember to slide the new flash slide ALL the way to the left to use the new flash (or if you just want to use the LED flash anyway), & about halfway for all of their normal “flashes” (there are 2 little symbols on the slider to show you how far you’ve gone, & for the hardware flash it makes that high-pitched sound & glows bright green, & for the usual “flashes” it makes NO sound & glows dim green). I hope this helps anyone even more. Again, happy shooting everyone! ~Kara
PS- I need some nice new photo apps- does anyone have any favorites? Thanks!

Hi Kara,

thanks for taking the time to post all the above information. I am entering the discussion too late, but you handled everything beautifully =)

As for new apps, it depends on what kind of thing you are going for: Hipstamatic’s replacement (instant camera, no need to tweak with post-processing) or else?

Kara September 26, 2011 at 11:37 am

Hi Pu,
Wow, thanks for the compliment! 🙂 I was SO confused by Hipstamatic’s new “flash” that I just knew others were too, & I wanted to pass on the information. 🙂
Let’s see- I have things like Instagram, PhotoStudio, PixIromatic, Color Splash, 3 photo booth apps, Swankolab, & more. So I guess I’m looking for both kinds that could be recommended to me as good photo apps in both fields. (I wouldn’t even mind a list from you/anyone/everyone!) lol 😉
Thanks for listening!

Hello again 🙂 Can you recommend a good panorama app for the iPhone4? (Anyone else who reads this, too- any suggestions?) Thank you so much! 🙂

Kara September 26, 2011 at 12:04 pm

Pu,
Did you get my reply? Did anyone I responded to just now, up above? I don’t see it up there- but then again I’m not the world’s most computer science-oriented person; I’m into all sorts of biological science lol. 🙂 Just erase this message if it’s in the way. Thanks! 🙂

Pu September 26, 2011 at 4:12 pm

Have you tried Luminance or PicTools? Both good alternatives if you are into working a bit with post-processing. They have ready-to-use filters too anyway, so they’re good alternatives even for lazy people =)

Kara September 28, 2011 at 5:15 pm

Hello again 🙂
No, I haven’t tried them, but I will. Thanks for your suggestions! 🙂 I can’t wait to get a start on all the new info I just received!

Hello 🙂

Check out You Gotta See This! (collage style panorama) and DerManDar (360 outward panorama). Other honorable mentions are Sfera (360 outward and inward panorama) and Photosynth (wide angle panorama)
