Color Burst™ Review

Color Burst™ is a selective desaturation utility for iPhone. Though the idea at the core of Smart Solution’s app is the same as the one of almost all other color splash apps in the App Store — how many of them are there, by the way? –, Color Burst™ has some significant flaw that makes it not enjoyable and user-friendly.

Main Features

  • Full resolution available;
  • 3 painting modes (color, hue, gray);
  • 3 hues to recolor photos;
  • 4 brush sizes;
  • Invert;
  • Pan and zoom;
  • Undo.

Appotography Opinion

Color Burst™ allows applying color splashing on photos from your iPhone. From the main screen, you load your photo to the edit panel and select one among the three available painting modes (Color, Hue or Gray): Gray desaturates areas of your image you select by finger painting over them, while Color brings the original colors back.

Other than these two methods, you can choose Hue, which lets you apply a new hue to your photo. It looks like right now you only have three basic hues to choose from: red, green and blue. This is so silly that it is almost surreal; at any rate, I couldn’t find a color picker or any other way to select any other hue other than these three.

Color Burst™ for iPhoneUsing a special button, you can invert colored and black and white areas with one tap. If you make mistakes, you can undo. For more control, you can pan and zoom and, from the main screen, you can reset your image’s position by placing it back at the center of the edit panel. In border mode, you enable a mask preview for a better idea of what areas you are affecting while painting.

Color Burst™ for iPhoneWith no doubt, Color Burst™ has some serious issues. Compared to other selective desaturation apps we have reviewed (like, for example, Colorize and ColorSplash, both easy and fun to use), Color Burst™ is probably the less intuitive, stable and flexible. UI and features are elementary, tools available are few, adjustments you can make are very limited. Using this app feels so awkward, especially finger painting doesn’t feel comfortable and accurate enough on larger images and without the ability to freely resize your brush. The lack of tips or in-app manual doesn’t help, especially if you have not tried other similar apps before. Since I have tried Color Burst™ on 3GS only, I cannot say how much better it can get on iPhone 4. Anyhow, in my experience, this app is also crash prone. Considering you cannot restore from previous sessions, it’s not unlikely you’ll have to start over if anything happens while editing.

As I see it, Color Burst™  is definitely not even remotely the best option if you simply want to add, change or remove color selectively from your images.

Color Burst™ is currently on sale: you can download it for free for a limited time.

Colorize Review

Colorize‘s Yorkie, with its intense psychedelic hairdo, seems to know the coloring business well: Widgetize’s app for iPhone is so easy to use it’s almost ridiculous. Honestly, if all photography apps were so simple, we would be spending more time taking and editing photos and less trying to learn how to use apps to take and edit photos.

Main Features

  • Full resolution available;
  • Two painting modes (Recolor and Desaturate);
  • Restore from previous sessions;
  • Zoom in/out;
  • Color picker;
  • Adjustable brush size and hardness;
  • In-app guide.

Appotography Opinion

Colorize by Widgetize for iPhoneIn Colorize you can both selectively recolor and desaturate your images. The process to achieve the desired result is simple. You load a photo from your device or take one with the built-in camera; after that you are introduced to the app’s Main Panel. At the bottom of the Main Panel there is a set of tools: the recolor and desaturate brushes, the eraser and the color picker. For better control, the tools panel can be hidden when not required and it can be brought back again by dragging it with the finger.

Depending on which effect you want to accomplish, you can either choose the desaturate or the recolor brush. For both brushes, it’s possible to adjust size and hardness playing with sliders in the tools panel. The recolor brush only sets the color of your object and it doesn’t affect other parameters as brightness, contrast and overall saturation. With the color picker selected, you can quickly switch between colors to be applied to your image. All you are required to do is painting with your finger over the areas you want either to recolor or desaturate. By finger-pinching, you can zoom in and out for a more refined result; by using the undo function and the eraser, you can easily correct mistakes. It’s also possible to compare the original with your edited image.

All your projects are saved in the app’s gallery. This way, not only you can go back to keep on working on them, but you can also make changes at any moment.

Colorize does its work well and quickly. The UI works flawlessly and in general, for the simple task of selectively desaturating and recoloring photos, Widgetize’s app for iPhone is a pleasure to use.

More than a few other apps do the same as well and some of them even offer additional features. However, if you need an app exclusively focused on selective desaturation/recoloring, Colorize is really great.

ColorSplash Review

Have you ever wanted to try something in the middle between color and black and white? Have you ever wondered how to achieve that cool effect so popular in a certain type of photography, which consists in bringing out one element in the photo, leaving all the rest in the background? Do you feel sometimes too many elements in your picture appear distracting at the expenses of its main subject?

ColorSplash by Pocket Pixels allows you to desaturate portions of your image just using your finger. The final effect, if used correctly and on the right images, is indeed very dramatic and eye-catching.

Main Features

  • Full resolution available;
  • Restore from previous sessions;
  • Masking on/off;
  • Undo;
  • Four adjustable brushes;
  • Retina display support;
  • Possibility to share the photos via Facebook, Flickr, Twitter or email.

Appotography Opinion

ColorSplash has a fair usability. The developers conveniently offer video tutorials to help newbies understand how the app works and how to make use of its functionalities, from getting started to sharing.

You load your photo or take a shot: the app will automatically desaturate the whole picture. You choose the right brush among those available (hard and soft edged, transparent and opaque) and then you can proceed to paint with your finger over the photo in order to define which areas of your image you want to retain the original color and which ones will appear in black and white. By zooming and panning you can make the process smoother. To make things even simpler, you can check the accuracy of your work at all times by enabling a mask. An undo function will allow to correct mistakes as you work on the image and you can always restore from previous sessions – an important  feature that I think should be added in almost every photo editing app, but that unfortunately is still not as common as it should be.

Same image and session, inverted results.

ColorSplash has its pros and its cons: the app delivers exactly what it is supposed to; as far as actual usage is concerned, perhaps this is a limitation, since other apps include among their filters similar features, but at the same time I feel this is also a good aspect about this app, because you do not necessarily have to purchase a massive filter collection just to selectively desaturate an image. Some additional features could be added in order to play around more with the image saturation, but overall the app works well as it is now and it’s indeed very easy to use.

ColorSplash is also available in free version, so you can check it out before purchasing.
