Following its recent update, Grungetastic is now free in the App Store. JixiPix’s app had already gotten a price cut in occasion of the update to version 2.o.
The update to 2.0, which took place last week, revamped Grungetastic’s UI and added tons of new items, although mainly in the form of in-app purchase. A new update, to version 2.01, took place earlier today to allow users to have more freedom when applying effects and to help them to achieve subtler results. Grungetastic now counts seven themed preset packs and a rich choice of textures, borders and other elements to turn even the cleanest photo into a grungy feast.
You will find more details on the update to 2.0 of Grungetastic here. If you want to know how the app works and what it can do, please read our full review.
Grungetastic 2.0 is out in the App Store. This is a major update for JixiPix’s app.
The UI of the app underwent a considerable renovation. Now preset categories are all conveniently accessible from the bottom menu in the main edit area; all the presets in each category are also scrollable from the bottom menu, so that choosing and applying the right preset is much easier than before. Rendering times were also significantly improved in 2.0 and Grungetastic now is faster when processing and saving photos. Slow rendering times were one of the issues of the past versions of Grungetastic. Another noteworthy change in the latest release is the new content. Grungetastic now offers 140+ additional items to process photos. The content includes textures, scratches and splatters, which are arranged into four new themed packs: Gritty Grunge, Distressed Grunge, Worn Grunge and Worn Pop Grunge. All packs are available individually through in-app purchase, each for $0.99.

Please note that installing version 2.0 will delete all your custom presets, so be aware that your personal styles will be lost after updating.

Appotography Opinion
In Grungetastic, you can use both the built-in camera feature or load a photo from your device. For quick and easy editing, you can pick one of the many presets included in the app. Presets are arranged into different categories, each covering a style: Grunge, Pop Grunge, and Bleach Grunge. While Grunge is more about simply adding textural elements to photos, Bleach Grunge also adds fading, to convey more effectively the aged and distressed look. Pop Grunge mixes dirt and scratches with more or less intense posterization, for a peculiar and up-to-date graphic look.
Grunge textures and borders are the same for all style categories. You can apply two separate levels of grunge (two different textures, that is) and a border on the same image and set individually their opacity and color.
For a more distinctive result, you can create custom presets by adjusting the value of various parameters, like tone, threshold and bleach degree. You can save custom presets for further use or edit them to adapt them to your images. For unexpected combinations, you can try the Randomize button.

As with other JixiPix Software’s photo apps, rendering times in Grungetastic can be, on average, quite slow. Especially on very large images, adding effects and saving can be time-consuming. However, the interface works smoothly and the outcomes are fairly satisfactory. Given the amount of material you can work with, if you are into heavy processing and grungy, extreme effects, you will enjoy Grungetastic.
Photo Toaster and Grungetastic are currently on sale! You can get these two apps from the App Store for $0.99 (£0.59/€0.79), with a 50% discount on their original price tag.
